How To Be An Outstanding Middle Leader – Book Review

Firstly, I love how in her book Zoe Paramour mentions that she has intentionally not included a chapter that focuses on teaching and learning which was surprising as when one thinks of any form of school leadership role, improving teaching and learning is the first thing that comes to mind. However, Zoe highlights that this is not the responsibility of any one individual, and I couldn’t agree more with her.

” Everybody in school is responsible for teaching and learning; as a school it is our sole purpose and is our sole purpose of every decision we make.”

Zoe Paramour

Indeed teaching and learning, within any school, should be everyone’s responsibility.

This book made me question and rethink my role as a middle leader. It made me understand that the leadership style which inspires me and the type of leader that I aspire to be is not necessarily what others need and aspire to. This was indeed a pivotal moment in shifting my mindset to become more accepting of others leadership styles as well as to try and adapt according to your teammates/colleagues individual needs.

I highly recommend this book if you are in leadership and especially middle leadership. I loved the writing style, so natural, witty and true, as if a friend or mentor was talking to me. Buy this book if you are looking to reflect on your practice and maximise your impact as a middle leader.

One of the best reads in a long time!
