Preparing Your Child for High School

Transitioning from primary school to high school is a big change not only for pupils but for parents too. Moving to a new school with new classes, routines, new classmates and new teachers can all be overwhelming so it’s completely normal for pupils to feel nervous about starting high school. However, starting high school doesn’t need to be a scary experience for anyone.

To help with a smooth transition, I’ve gathered some tips so you and your child can make the transition to high school a super easy one.

Read on to find out how you can prepare your child and yourself for the high school years to come!

  1. Visit the school

Before the end of the primary year, your child should visit the high school he/she is to attend. Together you can look around the campus and get a feel of what is to come.

  2. Discuss class selection with your child

In high school, subject choice is usually slightly different to that of a primary school. Routines and schedules will also differ as independence is encouraged and key to future success.

  3. Look into additional extracurricular activities

Talk to your child about which extracurricular activities might suit them and encourage them to give them a try. This will not only help them in learning something new but will also provide them the opportunity to make new friends and try out something new.

  4. Meet with the teachers

Meet with the teachers and discuss some of your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Find out how you might be able to support your teen in their learning; remember sometimes just trusting the process is good enough.

  5. Encourage summer reading

Reading anything during the summer break can ensure a smoother transition back to any classroom. If you have fostered healthy study habits and an inquisitive mindset then you’re a step in the best possible direction for an ultra smooth transition.

  6. Talk to your child

As the school year gets underway, continue to talk to your child about how school is going. It’s normal for kids to feel a bit overwhelmed during the first few weeks, so just be calm and be there for them.

I’m sure you’ll do a great job in helping your teen transition to high school.

All the best! ❤
