Well-Being Vs Reality

Well-being is huge in this day and age, something sought by just about everyone because it includes so many positive things such as feeling happy, healthy, socially connected, and purposeful. But have you ever stopped to wonder why? Why is there this eminent need for well-being in today’s society?

To build your overall well-being, whether you are a teacher or not, you have to make sure that emotional, physical, social, workplace, and society well-being are in an equilibrium, as one can throw other areas off balance. For example, if you are unhappy socially, this can affect other parts of your life such as your work, your physical state and most definitely your emotional state. Therefore, in order to maintain your well-being you have to be a well-rounded individual, be resilient, positive, have a good work ethic, eat well, sleep well, exercise, have meaningful and fun interactions with friends and find the time to do all this on a regular basis.

Is it just me, or are there others who think that finding the time to juggle everything so at to achieve this state of well-being, may just be a utopia?

Don’t get me wrong, I am not by any means saying that we should all pack it all in and just give up by kneeling under the pressure of our workloads and allow ourselves to drown in the negativity of thoughts. Of course, we need to look after ourselves and do what we can to be in this much needed state of well-being. We need to stay positive and be positive and do everything in our power to find a work-life balance.

I can’t help but wonder though, how much of it is really is in our own hands? How much do we have control over it? For we, as individuals, are searching for this well-being state in order to get through our daily lives, be good parents, good partners, good employees and employers. And let’s say for arguments sake, that you are one of those few individuals who have it all under control and are skillful at maintaining a balance in your life. I can’t help but wonder, is that really the solution to the problem? Shouldn’t we also look into the reason causing people to seek and think about their well-being to such an extent?

My solution may seem simplistic but if you worked in a less stressful environment, wouldn’t it make sense that you would be less stressed and therefore happier? If the demands of your workplace allowed you to come home and not have to continue to work from home, wouldn’t you have a better chance of maintaining healthier relationships with the people around you. Wouldn’t you possibly find that time to exercise and eat healthier? If you could take breaks, during the day, where you could talk to your colleagues about other things apart from work wouldn’t you have more time to have a social life and feel emotionally fulfilled? I think time is the essence and the reason that there is this huge need for well-being. People and not well and are in need for something to change. Yes, they can do certain things to cope and manage. Yes, they can do what they can to gain that equilibrium of well-being, but at the end of the day people are still not able to cope with today’s workplace demands that want us working 24/7 like robots.

In my opinion, we must slow down, society and workplaces must stop asking for more. As a result, I believe that everyone will benefit because people will have time for all those things they instinctively know they need for their well-being. People will naturally be in a better state to perform better in all areas of their lives and teachers will be better teachers.

In the meantime, until that happens, look after yourself.
