One of the topics covered in the English History curriculum, is Ancient Greece and philosophy. But, what is philosophy, one may ask? Philosophy is the study of knowledge, reality, and existence. And what does that mean exactly? That’s just it – there is no exact answer in philosophy!
Philosophy is the practice of asking really big questions that have no clear answer or that have more than one answer. The word philosophy comes from the Greek words for friend and wisdom. Philosophers ask questions to open topics of discussion and to get people listening and thinking.
What better way to introduce a history lesson on ancient Greek philosophy, than by using P4C! P4C is an abbreviation of Philosophy for Children, a movement that aims to teach reasoning and argumentative skills. Children either come up or are given a question, which then becomes the focus of a philosophical enquiry, or dialogue. P4C is about getting children to think and communicate well; to think better for themselves.
In this post I have created a lesson plan, which combines the P4C pedagogical method with the 5 minute lesson plan by TeacherToolkit, to introduce some Ancient Greek philosophers. Through P4C, children will be exposed to what philosophy is, by giving them a chance to actively engage in it, and making the lesson itself all the more meaningful.
The lesson plan uses a skeleton outline, of the 5 min plan by TeacherToolkit, which I personally love. It has however, been modified to suit my context. I hope you find it useful and inspiring!
