The Digestive System for Kids

So you are sitting down, having your lunch and you are enjoying every bit of it. All too soon, it’s gone! Ever wondered what happens to it?

The Digestive System for Kids

Well, as soon as the food goes into your mouth and saliva is added to it, your digestive system springs into action!  It’s the job of the digestive system to break  down the food into smaller parts called nutrients. The nutrients are then absorbed into the bloodstream and give you energy by  fueling  your body.

The food goes down your oesophagus (gullet) and continues into the stomach. It then passes to the small intestine. Substances called enzymes, speed up chemical reactions in the body and play an important role in breaking down the  food. They enter the small intestine from the pancreas. The nutrients are then carried to the liver. The liver stores, processes or distributes these nutrients to the body.

The rest of what is left (waste materials) move into the large intestine (colon). The solid wastes are collected and compacted to form faeces in the rectum. It is then pushed out of the body through the anus. That’s what happens when you go to the toilet. The digestion is then fully complete.
