Don’t you just love COLOUR? Creating a classroom environment for learners and teachers to feel safe, stimulated and motivated is so important since you both spend such a huge amount of your time there . The use of colour can aid to doing this and when used properly in a classroom, it can maximize information retention and stimulate learner participation.The age of the learners using the space and their reaction to colours needs to be carefully considered when deciding on your classroom colour scheme.

Younger children thrive in a brightly coloured environment. On the contrary, older children and adults can be overstimulated by large amounts of bright colours. In the classroom it is best to have a calming and neutral color on the walls but it is advised to add a splash of colour  to liven up what would otherwise be a dull, boring and unstimulating classroom – snore!

So what colour scheme should you go for? How do you choose? Read on to help you make the best decision!

According to research about colour use in the classroom, it has been shown that it can help promote different feelings in children and adults. Karen Walta explains this in more detail in her article.

RED is the most vibrant and stimulating of all colours. It is an extreme colour and could become overpowering, therefore it is best that it is used as an accent colour. The accent areas in a classroom could be some notice boards,baskets, pillows or other accessories.

YELLOW elicits feelings of liveliness, energy, happiness and excitement. It attracts attention faster than any other colour.  The reason is that yellow helps to release a chemical in the brain called Serotonin which is essential for causing a happy mood.

GREEN, BLUE and PURPLE are colours that elicit calmness, relaxation and comfort.

PINK, one of my personal favourites, and PASTEL colours soften energy. Pink is said to elicit comfort and nurture and relates to sensitivity and love. When choosing this colour for your classroom remember to take your boys into consideration, as they may not be too fond of it.

ORANGE, like red, is a strong vibrant colour which stimulates learners and attracts attention. Again, using it as an accent colour would work well in a classroom.

BLACK and WHITE are neutral colours and make a great combination together and with any of the colours above.

I would recommend you go for a combination of neutral and/or calm and relaxing colours paired with a splash of a  more vibrant colour, for attention and alertness. Having said that, that is only a suggestion, by choosing what works best for you with your learners in mind, it can only look great!

Remember colours can be subjective as it all boils down to a matter of taste.

This year, I was inspired by the school colours and chose: BLUE for calmness and comfort and YELLOW for stimulation and happiness, together with spacious white it reflects the exact environment I want to be teaching in and pupils learning in!
